The
famous Arethousa was once in the area of Agios
Stefanos, by the road leading to S. Evia. These are the
ruins of a scale, which consists of four stages, sculptured
on the rock, that were probably leading to an altar.
To
the nearby peripheral street leading to N. Evia, we can see Kamares.
These are well retained ruins of an ancient Roman aqua duct.
By
the beach of Chalkida, we can take a look at some very
remarkable neoclassic buildings. The Red House ,
visible from the most spots near the beach of Chalkida, is
one of them.
Some
others, equally impressive, are these of the Town-Hall,
the House With The Statues, and other remains of a recent
epoch.
Finishing
this brief reference to Chalkida, we have to point out the
existence of the Archaeological site of Manika
(prehistoric Chalkida). It is only a few kilometers away,
from the north-western side of the capital of Evia.
Important findings have come to light from this site,
proving the existence of a big settlement during the
prehistoric period (in 2900 – 2300 BC).
