 WORTH SEEING ERETRIA Ι

The city, during the ancient years, was the rival of Chalkida. They were competing in every aspect. Culture, trade, colonies. The result of this opposition, was the renown war of Lilantio, between Chalkida and Eretria (720 - 660 BC)

Today, in the city we can see the Archaeological museum of Eretria. Its exhibits are very valuable and extremely interesting.

Among them we can admire age-old findings from Lefkandi, from Eretria since the geometric period, archaic sculptures from the western pediment of the temple of Dafniforos Apollo, findings from the temple of Artemis of Amarinthos, the famous complex of Theseus and Antiope etc.

Right opposite to the museum, the archaeological site and the ruins of ancient Eretria is expanding in a great distance to the east. There the visitor has the opportunity to walk through the remains of the ancient ci-ty and to admire the relics of gymnasiums, palaces and temples (temple of Dionysus, Isio, sanctuaries, etc.)

To the south-eastern site of the archaeological site, there are signs of the ancient theatre of Eretria.
